“The daily average of willful homicides in Mexico decreased 53 percent during the first 23 months of the Government of President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, from 86.9 cases in September 2024 to 40.8 in August 2026, according to the crime incidence report filed on September 8, 2026 by the Executive Secretariat of the National Public Security System.

Marcela Figueroa, head of the Executive Secretariat of the National Public Security System, reported that the reduction is equivalent to 46 fewer murders each day.

‘We reported a decrease of 53 percent between September 2024, in which 86.9 homicides were recorded daily on average, and the month that has just ended, which closed at an average of 40.8 homicides daily, being also this August 2026 the lowest month of these months analyzed,’ he said.

The report was compiled with figures from the 32 state prosecutors’ offices consolidated as of August 31, 2026.

According to the SESNSP, August 2026 also recorded the lowest daily average for that month since 2015, when 54 homicides per day were counted.

The historical series of the indicator peaked in August 2020, with 96.5 homicides daily, and thereafter dropped to 91.1 in 2021, 84.4 in 2022, 80.8 in 2023, 79.7 in 2024 and 60.1 in 2025, to 40.8 in 2026.”
