“The total area deforested in the South American country last year dropped to 1.24 million hectares — a 32.4% decrease from 2023, MapBiomas said in its May 15 report.

The previous year, deforestation had already fallen by 11%, but that reduction was not uniform across all of Brazil’s biomes — ecosystems defined by distinct climate, vegetation, flora and fauna. The 2024 data marks the first time all biomes recorded a drop since MapBiomas began collecting figures in 2019.”
