“Kidneys are so complex that efforts to grow them in the lab from stem cells have only produced crude approximations. But today in Cell Stem Cell, researchers reveal the most realistic kidney facsimiles yet, boosting the dream of one day generating full-fledged versions of the organs for transplants. Reared from kidney stem cells, the 1-millimeter-wide structures, known as organoids, recapitulate some of the intricate internal organization of the kidney and, when transplanted into mice, make urine. The new organoids could help scientists study how kidneys develop and function, probe their diseases, and test therapies.”
