“Globally, the year to date has seen moderate biomass burning emissions according to the Global Fire Assimilation System (GFAS) dataset, based on satellite observations of active fires, produced by the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service. The GFAS dataset, which covers 2003 to present, shows the lowest global total estimated biomass burning emissions in the 24-year record for the first half of the year (from 1 January – 30 June), and continuing the overall downward trend driven by reduced levels of seasonal biomass burning in topical Africa. Through late June, boreal forest fire activity in Canada and Russia has been rapidly increasing and the global picture could change quickly.”
