“Gray wolves are a species natives to California, but around a century ago, humans killed them off. After 1924, a gray wolf was not documented in California until 2011, when a wolf known as OR-7 famously crossed the state line from Oregon. Since then, wolves have steadily reclaimed a presence in the far northern reaches of California.

In 2015, wildlife officials documented the first pack in California in nearly 100 years. Those wolves were known as the Shasta pack, though the pack disappeared soon after it was discovered.

The second pack of wolves was confirmed in 2017 and was known as the Lassen pack. A third, the Whaleback pack, was confirmed in 2020. Now, five years later, with a total of 10 packs, Hunnicutt said, ‘The landscape has changed dramatically.'”
