Milei lowers rent in Buenos Aires

One of Javier Milei’s first moves after becoming president of Argentina was repealing the strict rent controls imposed by his predecessor. The reform is already seeing results. Since Milei’s repeal, rental listings in Buenos Aires have surged by 184 percent, while inflation-adjusted rents have fallen 40 percent. Other cities suffering from a housing shortage should take note.

Two American sicknesses falter

New federal data shows that, after many years of steady growth, both the obesity rate and drug overdose deaths have fallen in recent years. According to the Centers for Disease Control, just over 40 percent of US adults were obese between August 2021 and August 2023, two percentage points lower than during the previous period. Overdose deaths, meanwhile, fell ten percent between April 2023 and April 2024. While it’s too early to tell what caused these drops or if they will endure, it’s hopeful to see these distressing trends finally reverse.

A new golden age of air travel

On Thursday, Air France announced that it is partnering with Starlink to provide free WiFi to all passengers. That makes Air France the eighth airline to offer this amenity, a group that also includes United Airlines and Qatar Airways. It seems likely that most major airlines will follow suit. With free, high-speed connection in the sky and a new generation of supersonic planes in the works, we may be heading towards a second “golden age” of air travel. And, this time, it won’t be limited to the wealthy few.
