Long-Run Decline in US Poverty Continued in Recent Years

“Using data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Consumer Expenditure Survey and the U.S. Census Bureau’s Current Population Survey, the researchers challenge common misconceptions created by the official government poverty data. According to the researchers, consumption, which measures what families are able to purchase in terms of food, housing, transportation and other goods and services, offers a better indicator of economic well-being than income, which can fluctuate for reasons unrelated to well-being.

Between 1980 and 2022, consumption poverty fell from 33.8 percent to 6.0 percent, even though the official poverty rate indicated a drop by only 1.5 percentage points over that same period.”

Poverty in Indonesia Drops by 1.84 Million People Since 2023

“The percentage of Indonesia’s population living in poverty decreased to 8.57 percent in September 2024, a decline of 0.46 percentage points compared to March 2024 and a 0.79 percentage point decrease from the same month in 2023.

‘The poverty rate of 8.57 percent in September 2024 marks the lowest level ever recorded in Indonesia since poverty data was first released by BPS in 1960,’ said Amalia Adininggar Widyasanti in Jakarta on Wednesday. This is also the first time the poverty rate has fallen below 9 percent.

According to the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) data released on Wednesday, the total number of poor people in the country reached 24.06 million in September 2024, marking a reduction of 1.16 million people from March 2024 and a decrease of 1.84 million from March 2023.

Several factors contributed to the decline in poverty during the period from March 2024 to September 2024, including Indonesia’s strong economic growth. The country’s economy grew by 5.35 percent in the third quarter of 2024 compared to the first quarter.”

“The multidimensional poverty rate in Vietnam has fallen to below 1% this year, the Ministry of Labour – Invalids and Social Affairs (MoLISA) reported at its year-end review conference held in Hanoi on December 27.

Between 2021 and 2024, Vietnam has reduced the rate by approximately 4.2%, an average year-on-year decrease of 1.05%. Annually, it drops by over 4% in poor districts to about 26% at present, and by more than 3% among ethnic minority groups to less than 13.5%.

Ten communes with particular disadvantages in sandbank, coastal, and maritime areas, along with one district, have managed to escape from poverty during the period, according to the ministry.”
