Intentional Homicides in Mexico Fall by 4.18%, below 30,000 in 2023

“Intentional homicides in Mexico dropped by 4.18% annually to 29,675 in 2023, the Secretariat of Security and Civil Protection (SSPC in Spanish), Rosa Icela Rodríguez, announced Tuesday.

Most Crime Has Fallen by 90% in 30 Years in England and Wales

“Seventy-eight per cent of people in England and Wales think that crime has gone up in the last few years, according to the latest survey. But the data on actual crime shows the exact opposite.

As of 2024, violence, burglary and car crime have been declining for 30 years and by close to 90%, according to the Crime Survey for England and Wales (CSEW) – our best indicator of true crime levels. Unlike police data, the CSEW is not subject to variations in reporting and recording.

The drop in violence includes domestic violence and other violence against women. Anti-social behaviour has similarly declined.”

Murder Rates Are Plummeting. What Should We Make Of It?

“In data from over 200 cities, murder rates are down a little over 19 percent when compared to a similar time frame in 2023. Specifically, New York’s homicide rate is down about 18 percent, Washington, D.C.’s has declined 21 percent, Baltimore’s has dropped 39 percent, Philadelphia’s is down 40 percent, Chicago’s has decreased by about 9 percent, Detroit’s has fallen about 28 percent, and Cleveland’s is down by approximately 33 percent. The list goes on. There are a few outliers—Los Angeles’ rate, for instance, has increased by about 6 percent—but overwhelmingly the trend is highly encouraging.”

The US Crime Rate Is Still Dropping, FBI Data Shows

“New FBI data confirms previous indications that crime in the U.S. declined significantly in 2023, continuing a post-pandemic trend and belying widespread perceptions that crime is rising.

The new fourth-quarter numbers showed a 13% decline in murder in 2023 from 2022, a 6% decline in reported violent crime and a 4% decline in reported property crime. That’s based on data from around 13,000 law enforcement agencies, policing about 82% of the U.S. population, that provided the FBI with data through December.”

Italy, Home of the Mafia, Now One of Europe’s Safest Countries

“Back in 1990, there were 34 murders per one million inhabitants in Italy, compared to 24 in neighbouring France, according to UN figures.

In 2021-22, this had fallen to 5.5 per million in Italy and 11 in France, eight in Germany and 10 in the UK.

In Europe, only Norway and Switzerland have a murder rate lower or equal to Italy’s, while Latvia, the worst, has a rate 6.5 times higher.”
