“Scientists have created the first map of the crucial structures called mitochondria throughout the entire brain ― a feat that could help to unravel age-related brain disorders…
Growing evidence suggests that the brain’s mitochondria undergo changes early in the course of some psychiatric diseases and age-related brain diseases, says Nathalie Rochefort, a neuroscientist at the University of Edinburgh, UK. The new data will allow scientists to study mitochondrial change in vulnerable brain regions in greater detail, she says.
The researchers say that further work needs to be done to fully understand mitochondrial diversity in and between brains. The team has already begun a larger project to map 9 regions in 500 human brains, which would allow it to compare brain mitochondria between individuals with and without neurological, psychiatric and neurodegenerative disorders.”
