AI Is a Great Equalizer That Will Change the World

A positive revolution from AI is already unfolding in the global East and South.

However, a closer examination reveals AI’s immense potential to revolutionize equal and high quality access to necessities such as education and healthcare, particularly in regions with limited access to resources. From India’s agricultural advancements to Kenya’s educational support, AI initiatives are already transforming lives and addressing societal needs.


The latest technology panic is over artificial intelligence (AI). The media is focused on the negatives of AI, making many assumptions about how AI will doom us all. One concern is that AI tools will replace workers and cause mass unemployment. This is likely overblown—although some jobs will be lost to AI, if history is any guide, new jobs will be created. Furthermore, AI’s ability to replace skilled labor is also one of its greatest potential benefits.

Think of all the regions of the world where children lack access to education, where schoolteachers are scarce and opportunities for adult learning are scant.

Think of the preventable diseases that are untreated due to a lack of information, the dearth of health care providers, and how many lives could be improved and saved by overcoming these challenges.

In many ways, AI will be a revolutionary equalizer for poorer countries where education and health care have historically faced many challenges. In fact, a positive revolution from AI is already unfolding in the global East and South.

Improving Equality through Education and Health Care

In India, agricultural technology startup Saagu Baagu is already improving lives. This initiative allows farmers to increase crop yield through AI-based solutions. A chatbot provides farmers with the information they need to farm more effectively (e.g., through mapping the maturity stages of their crops and testing soil so that AI can make recommendations on which fertilizers to use depending on the type of soil). Saagu Baagu has been successful in the trial region and is now being expanded. This AI initiative is likely to revolutionize agriculture globally.

Combining large language models with speech-recognition software is helping Indian farmers in other ways. For example, Indian global impact initiative Karya is working on helping rural Indians, who speak many different languages, to overcome language barriers. Karya is collecting data on tuberculosis, which is a mostly curable and preventable disease that kills roughly 200,000 Indians every year. By collecting voice recordings of 10 different dialects of Kannada, an AI speech model is being trained to communicate with local people. Tuberculosis carries much stigma in India, so people are often reluctant to ask for help. AI will allow Indians to reduce the spread of the disease and give them access to reliable information.

In Kenya, where students are leading in AI use, the technology is aiding the spread of information by allowing pupils to ask a chatbot questions about their homework.

Throughout the world, there are many challenges pertaining to health care, including increasing costs and staff shortages. As developed economies now have rapidly growing elderly populations and shrinking workforces, the problem is set to worsen. In Japan, AI is helping with the aging population issue, where a shortage of care workers is remedied by using robots to patrol care homes to monitor patients and alert care workers when something is wrong. These bots use AI to detect abnormalities, assist in infection countermeasures by disinfecting commonly touched places, provide conversation, and carry people from wheelchairs to beds and bathing areas, which means less physical exertion and fewer injuries for staff members.

In Brazil, researchers used AI models capable of predicting HER2 subtype breast cancer in imaging scans of 311 women and the patients’ response to treatment. In addition, AI can also help make health resource allocations more efficient and support tasks such as preparing for public health crises, such as pandemics. At the individual level, the use of this technology in wearables, such as smartwatches, can encourage patient adherence to treatments, help prevent illnesses, and collect data more frequently.

Biometric data gathered from wearable devices could also be a game-changer. This technology can detect cancers early, monitor infectious diseases and general health issues, and give patients more agency over their health where access to health care is limited or expensive.

Education and health care in the West could also benefit from AI. In the United States, text synthesis machines could help to address the lack of teachers in K–12 education and the inaccessibility of health care for low-income people.

Predicting the Future

AI is already playing a role in helping humanity tackle natural disasters (e.g., by predicting how many earthquake aftershocks will strike and their strength). These models, which have been trained on large data sets of seismic events, have been found to estimate the number of aftershocks better than conventional (non-AI) models do.

Forecasting models can also help to predict other natural disasters like severe storms, floods, hurricanes, and wildfires. Machine learning uses algorithms to reduce the time required to make forecasts and increase model accuracy, which again is superior to the non-AI models that are used for this purpose. These improvements could have a massive impact on people in poor countries, who currently lack access to reliable forecasts and tend to be employed in agriculture, which is highly dependent on the weather.

A Case for Optimism

Much of the fear regarding AI in the West concerns the rapid speed at which it is being implemented, but for many countries, this speed is a boon.

Take the mobile phone. In 2000, only 4 percent of people in developing countries had access to mobile phones. By 2015, 94 percent of the population had such access, including in sub-Saharan Africa.

The benefits were enormous, as billions gained access to online banking, educational opportunities, and more reliable communication. One study found that almost 1 in 10 Kenyan families living in extreme poverty were able to lift their incomes above the poverty line by using the banking app M-Pesa. In rural Peru, household consumption rose by 11 percent with access to phones, while extreme poverty fell 5.4 percent. Some 24 percent of people in developing countries now use the mobile internet for educational purposes, compared with only 12 percent in the richest countries. In lower-income countries, access to mobile phones and apps is life-changing.

AI, which only requires access to a mobile phone to use, is likely to spread even faster in the countries that need the technology the most.

This is what we should be talking about: not a technology panic but a technology revolution for greater equality in well-being.

South Africa Private Investment Plans Triple as Reforms Advance

“Planned capital investment in South Africa surged last year as private commitments tripled, while government projects excluding state companies declined, according to a report by Nedbank Group Ltd.

The value of newly announced plans climbed 16% to 705.6 billion rand ($44 billion), the lender said in its Capital Expenditure Project Listing report released Monday.

Private firms committed to investing 382.5 billion rand, up from 116.2 billion rand in 2024. Major initiatives included Vodacom Group Ltd.’s 85.2 billion-rand expansion and modernization of digital infrastructure through network upgrades and an accelerated 5G rollout, and NT55 Investments’ planned 50 billion-rand inland port in the central Gauteng province…

By contrast, the value of projects planned by the government itself tumbled to 2.9 billion rand last year, from 204 billion rand in 2024, when the authorities announced a 43.7 billion-rand housing and community development program and a 35.8 billion-rand second phase of the Rooiwal wastewater project.

Years of underinvestment and mismanagement have left Africa’s largest economy with a massive infrastructure backlog that’s curbed output. President Cyril Ramaphosa has previously estimated that the country needs as much as 1.6 trillion rand in public-sector infrastructure investment and a further 3.2 trillion rand from the private sector for it to achieve its infrastructure goals by 2030.

The government has sought to crowd in private investment through reforms while shifting spending toward growth-enhancing infrastructure. Measures under Operation Vulindlela — a task force set up by Ramaphosa to address energy and freight constraints — are progressing, with 47% of reforms on track and most of the remainder advancing despite delays, the National Treasury said Friday.”

1.1 Million Mexicans Lifted Out of Poverty Thanks to Remittances

“During the first nine months of 2025, remittances to Mexico totaled 45,681 million, 5.5% less than the 48,360 million received during the same period in 2024.

Despite this decrease, remittances increased in several states in the central-southern region during the first nine months of the year, notably Chiapas (+1.2%), Oaxaca (+2.0%), Puebla (+1.9%), Guerrero (+4.2%), Veracruz (+0.9%), and Morelos (+1.3%).

1.1 million people in Mexico have been lifted out of multidimensional poverty thanks to remittance transfers. If remittance income is not included in the 2024 measurement, the population living in poverty in Mexico would increase from 38.5 million to 39.6 million people.”

Remittances and Our Freedom to Give

A crucial alternative to foreign aid is being threatened.

Summary: Remittances are a lifeline for millions around the world. Unlike foreign aid, these funds cost taxpayers nothing and flow directly to those who need them most, improving health, education, and opportunity. Yet new proposals to tax and restrict remittances threaten this vital support system. Reducing the freedom to give across borders would needlessly destroy opportunities for crucial economic development.


Remittances, the funds immigrants send to family members in their countries of origin, are under political fire. Many US policymakers favor taxing these payments and placing bureaucratic hurdles in the way of those trying to send money home. The rationale? Keep more money circulating in the US economy. It’s a seductive argument for many. Yet this idea is not only shortsighted but harmful.

First, consider the scale of these payments. The average global migrant worker sends 15 percent of their salary back home. That is only about $250 every 1 to 2 months, but it represents one-half the average monthly salary after tax of a worker in El Salvador, and just above the average monthly salary of a worker in Bangladesh. Thus, the flow of cash from a migrant worker can determine who back home can afford a metal roof, a well, pavement, nutritious food, payment of debt, medical coverage, or education. 

The United Nations estimates that one billion people worldwide either pay or receive remittances. The World Bank anticipates that global remittance payments sent to low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) will total $690 billion by the end of 2025. The amount of money sent by migrants more than tripled global foreign aid money in 2021.

Unlike foreign aid, remittances don’t cost US taxpayers a dime. According to Robert Stojanov and Wadim Strielkowski, remittances are absorbed nearly twice as effectively as official development assistance, or foreign aid for development. The absorption rate represents how effectively money is used and traded in the economy it enters. In other words, money given by remittances is often more effectively used in local developing economies than money provided through foreign aid.

Remittances are especially important for families because they can reduce child mortality and child labor. When parents receive steady financial support from family members abroad, they are better able to support their children and afford medical care for them. The children, in turn, are less burdened by the need to work and can attend school.

Remittances are also crucial in times of economic uncertainty. During the COVID-19 pandemic, remittances accounted for more than 30 percent of the gross domestic product (GDP) for The Gambia and Lebanon, providing essential support for recipients and boosting local economic activity.

In the early 2010s, internet and mobile phone access were still limited in many developing countries. However, in just the past decade, the world has seen a 30 percent increase in internet users worldwide, and the World Bank estimates that 84 percent of people in developing countries own a mobile phone in 2025. Importantly, the adoption of mobile phones correlates with the adoption of mobile money accounts, facilitating millions of remittances.

Western Union is the dominant remittance handler in the developing world and has historically used its comfortable market share to impose high fees to transfer remittances. However, because of the spread of mobile devices in the developing world, fintech companies such as Wise and Remitly have since entered the remittance market, offering users lower transfer fees and forcing Western Union to lower its fees in turn.

Prior to the information age, most of Africa suffered from a lack of financial infrastructure, such as automated teller machines (ATM), banks, and tellers. However, since the distribution of mobile devices, companies such as Wave and M-PESA have experienced strong adoption of mobile remittance transfers. These mobile money payments, like those traditionally handled by Western Union, reduce poverty and income inequality in developing countries, but with much lower transfer costs and infrastructure needs. 

Remittances also represent an essential human freedom: the right to give. Just as Americans can freely send money through Venmo and Zelle without government interference, individuals who transfer funds internationally should enjoy the same freedom. However, the recently passed One Big Beautiful Bill Act will put a 1 percent excise tax on remittances.

A world with greater freedom and improved economic development demands that all people are free to send and receive money. As calculated by the Center for Global Development, “for many low- and middle-income countries, the impact of the remittance tax far outweighs the impact of known US aid cuts conducted so far.”

During an interview with me, Helen Dempster of the Center for Global Development stated that a remittance tax could decrease remittances themselves. This decrease in transfers may incentivize banks and lenders to charge higher fees. According to Dempster in the interview on July 4th, 2025:

There’s been a campaign for 20 years now to reduce the cost of sending remittances and many remittance service providers, particularly the large ones like Western Union, are keeping fees stubbornly high. I think if they wanted to keep fees low to encourage remittances, they would have reduced their fees by now. So, my sense is that they will pass the whole amount of the cost on to consumers.

Because of this tax, some of the most powerless individuals will suffer the cost, and the US will earn negligible revenue. As we’ve seen in past decades, greater freedom to migrants and competition between lenders directly improve the lives of the global poor. Ultimately, preserving our freedom to give not only protects our human rights, but positively transforms the day-to-day lives of millions and the future of the developing world.
