“The Peruvian Diving Petrel Pelecanoides garnotii experienced a dramatic population decrease from an estimated 100,000 breeding pairs in the early 20th century to just 300 pairs by 1980. Since the 1990s, conservation efforts have promoted a remarkable recovery. We updated population estimates on Choros Island, the species’ primary breeding site, through a census conducted in November 2024. We estimated 89,876 breeding pairs (95% CI: 80,952-98,800), representing a 7.5-fold increase since 2013 and a 300-fold recovery over 44 years. The expansion of breeding habitat and consolidation of nesting patches reflect successful long-term conservation measures, particularly habitat protection and eradication of European Rabbit Oryctolagus cuniculus.”
