“Coal generation has stopped growing in 17 of 26 provinces and regions in China, and fossil fuel use has passed its peak in eight of 11 industrial sectors, according to a new analysis by global energy think tank Ember.
Thermal generation, most of it coal, fell 0.7% in 2025 while electricity demand rose 5%. It has fallen before, but the last time was 2015, when demand was almost flat at 0.5% growth. A fall under strong demand growth is different: it shows that clean electricity is growing quickly enough to both meet rapid demand growth and replace coal.”
