Schools Have Grown Less Violent since COVID

“In the last decade, schools nationally have seen marked declines in campus violence — according to students themselves. In 2022, students ages 12 to 18 reported that they were the victims of violence at school at a rate of 15.6 incidents per 1,000 students.

In fact, the federal data suggest that 2022 was the safest year for students in the last decade. Leading up to the pandemic, in 2018, the nation’s students were the victims of violence at school at a rate of 24 per 1,000 students.”

The US to Record Lowest Violent Crime Rate Since 1968

“Early crime data for 2025 — when considered in context of the nation’s crime trends in 2023 and 2024 — points to new historic lows being reached this year. The available data from 2024 and the first third of of 2025 suggests a strong possibility that the United States will report the lowest murder rate ever recorded, the lowest property rate ever recorded, and the lowest violent crime rate since 1968.”

Jamaica Records Significant Decline in Murders

“Jamaica is witnessing a remarkable decline in murders, according to the latest national crime statistics released by the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF). As of May 17, 2025, the country has recorded 257 homicides—representing a 42 percent reduction compared to the 439 murders reported during the same period in 2024.

This downward trend continues the encouraging trajectory noted earlier this year, with homicides steadily decreasing across most police divisions. In the previous week alone, Jamaica recorded nine murders, contributing to the lowest national average in recent years.”

Bolivia Takes Historic Step Against Child Marriage

“On April 23, the Bolivian Senate approved a bill to amend the ‘Family and Family Procedure Code,’ eliminating legal exceptions that previously allowed marriage from the age of 16 with parental or judicial authorization. This milestone represents a historic victory for the protection of girls and adolescents against Child, Early, and Forced Marriages and Unions (CEFMUs) and marks a significant step toward ensuring a childhood free from violence…

Following its approval in the Senate, the bill will now be forwarded to the Chamber of Deputies.”

Colombia Declares Child Marriage Unconstitutional

“Colombia has declared child marriage unconstitutional. Colombia’s Constitutional Court today [2/6/25] took a step further in banning child marriage, by declaring Articles 117 and 124 of the Civil Code unconstitutional. These articles had allowed children over the age of 14 to marry with the consent of their legal representatives. From now on, all marriages must involve individuals who are at least 18 years old.”
