Rented Robots Get the Worst Jobs and Help Factories Keep Humans

“Employees at S&F Foods dreaded lifting heavy cardboard boxes from a conveyor belt and placing them onto pallets for shipment all day. So Mike Calleja, the plant manager for the company, which makes frozen food for school cafeterias, hired a robot.

Buying a robot could cost as much as $500,000, and Mr. Calleja wasn’t even confident that one would work. Instead, he rented a robot from Formic, a Woodridge, Ill., firm that takes care of installation, training, programming and repairs. It costs about $23 an hour, roughly the same as a human.

‘We have very low turnover because we try to make jobs easier,’ Mr. Calleja said of the company, which is outside Detroit. ‘We are a small facility, but we produce about 65,000 pounds of food a day’  Stacking it was ‘a backbreaking job,’ he said.

In an era when manufacturers consistently list attracting and retaining workers as a top challenge, companies are automating some of the worst jobs in their plants as a worker retention strategy.

The robot rental model has the potential to transform the American industrial base by making automation accessible to small and medium-size businesses that have traditionally been slow to adopt new technology.”

Drones Bring Whole Blood to Trauma Scenes

“Tampa General Hospital (TGH) today announced the launch of the nation's first EMS-driven drone delivery program for pre-hospital whole blood delivery. The initiative will decrease the amount of time needed to deliver lifesaving blood directly to the scene of traumatic injuries, offering patients a better chance at survival.

The emergency drone logistics systems and services are provided by Archer First Response Systems and operated by Hillsborough County Fire Rescue. When a 9-1-1 call involves an incident with severe blood loss, dispatch will direct emergency responders to the scene who can simultaneously call for deployment of a drone equipped with whole blood. The two drone systems are expected to cover a combined 70-square-mile area, delivering the lifesaving blood to the scene in under three minutes on average. First responders can begin transfusions, if needed, immediately on scene, well before the patient arrives at the hospital.”

Global Airline Safety Improved as Accident Rates Fell in 2025

“One of the clearest indicators of progress is the global accident rate, which measures how many accidents occur per one million flight departures.

In 2025, the global accident rate improved from 2.6 to 2.2 accidents per million departures, a reduction of nearly 13 per cent. Put simply, airlines conducted more flights while experiencing fewer accidents overall.

The strongest safety improvement in 2025 occurred in the area of fatal accidents, in which at least one person loses their life.

The number of fatal accidents fell from 10 in 2024 to 4 in 2025, while the fatal accident rate declined by 60 per cent, from 0.27 to 0.11 fatal accidents per million departures.”

Pfizer Drug Restores Pigment in Late-Stage Vitiligo Trials

“Pfizer said on Thursday its oral drug helped restore skin color in patients with a common form of vitiligo in ​two late-stage trials…

The U.S. drugmaker was testing Litfulo in patients with nonsegmental vitiligo, the most common type of the ​disease, which causes patches of skin to lose pigment.

Pfizer said ​both studies showed significantly more patients treated with the ⁠drug achieved at least a 75% improvement in facial repigmentation and ​at least a 50% improvement in total-body repigmentation after 52 weeks ​compared with those given placebo.”

Robotic Single-Port Nipple-Sparing Mastectomy Performed

“Sutter Health is advancing breast cancer care with the performance of a single-port robotic nipple-sparing mastectomy (SP rNSM) in a community-based medical center — among the first known procedures of its kind in the United States outside of a clinical trial. The milestone reflects a broader shift as leading-edge surgical innovations move beyond research settings into real-world patient care, expanding access to advanced cancer care closer to home.

The procedure was performed March 9 at the Oakland, Calif. campus of Sutter’s Alta Bates Summit Medical Center by Rita Kwan-Feinberg, M.D., MPH, FACS, a Sutter East Bay Medical Group breast cancer and robotic surgeon with specialized training. Using a SP robotic surgical system, the approach enables surgery through a single, small incision, enhancing precision, minimizing visible scarring and supporting a more patient-centered recovery experience. The robotic platform has received FDA clearance for use in nipple‑sparing mastectomy, representing an emerging approach still being evaluated for long-term outcomes.”
