Progress Against Under-nourishment Since the Pandemic

“The latest assessment of world hunger, measured by the prevalence of undernourishment (PoU) (SDG Indicator 2.1.1), reveals signs of improvement in recent years. The PoU had begun to rise slowly in 2017 and then increased sharply in 2020 and 2021 in the wake of the pandemic. However, the latest assessment points to encouraging progress from 2022 to 2024. An estimated 8.2 percent of the global population may have faced hunger in 2024, down from 8.5 percent in 2023 and 8.7 percent in 2022. It is estimated that between 638 and 720 million people (7.8 to 8.8 percent of the global population) faced hunger in 2024. Considering the point estimate (673 million), this indicates a decrease of 15 million compared to 2023 and of 22 million compared to 2022.

The progress seen at the global level is driven by notable improvement in South-eastern Asia, Southern Asia – which mainly reflects the impact of new data from India – and South America. The PoU in Asia decreased from 7.9 percent in 2022 to 6.7 percent (323 million people) in 2024. Progress was also made in Latin America and the Caribbean, where the latest estimates show the PoU decreasing to 5.1 percent in 2024 after peaking at 6.1 percent in 2020.

Unfortunately, this positive trend contrasts with the steady rise in hunger in most subregions of Africa and in Western Asia. The PoU in Africa surpassed 20 percent in 2024, and in Western Asia it rose to 12.7 percent.

According to the current projection, 512 million people in the world may be chronically undernourished in 2030, of whom nearly 60 percent will be in Africa, highlighting the immense challenge of achieving SDG 2 (Zero Hunger).”

Farming Technique Could Curb Devastating Tropical Disease

“Despite decades of mass drug administration campaigns, schistosomiasis remains one of the world’s most widespread neglected tropical diseases. Rice farmers and their families are particularly at risk, as the parasitic worms that cause the disease are spread by freshwater snails found in the standing water of rice fields.

New research published in Nature Sustainability has explored how rice-fish coculturing – an intervention technique that introduces fish into the rice fields – could help reduce disease incidence and poverty along the northern Senegal River basin, a hot spot for schistosomiasis.”

Time Pricing the Fourth of July Cookout

Summary: The dollar price of a traditional Fourth of July cookout has increased since 2016, but rising wages have more than offset those higher prices. As a result, Americans spend less time working to earn this year’s Independence Day meal than they did a decade ago. Measured in time rather than dollars, the data show that abundance has continued to grow as the population has increased.


Every year, the American Farm Bureau Federation estimates the cost of a traditional Independence Day cookout. The basket includes summer cookout staples such as cheeseburgers, chicken breasts, pork chops, potato chips, pork and beans, fresh strawberries, homemade potato salad ingredients, fresh-squeezed lemonade ingredients, chocolate chip cookies, and ice cream.

Since 2016, the dollar cost of this basket has risen 30.3 percent, from $56.67 to $73.82. At first glance, that suggests celebrating the Fourth of July has become significantly more expensive.

But money prices tell only half of the story. The real question is not how many dollars the meal costs, but how much time people must work to earn those dollars. Since 2016, blue-collar worker hourly earnings increased 50.4 percent, from $21.48 to $32.31 per hour.

Because wages rose faster than prices, the time price of the cookout actually fell 13.4 percent—from 2.64 hours of work in 2016 to just 2.28 hours today, a savings of 21 minutes.

Another way to measure progress is to ask: How much more does the same hour of work buy? We call this the abundance multiplier. Compared with 2016, the same amount of work today buys 15.5 percent more.

America added 22 million people between 2016 and today, a population increase of 6.8 percent. Yet abundance didn’t merely keep pace with population—it grew 2.28 times as fast. Every 1 percent increase in people produced a 2.28 percent increase in cookout abundance. That’s the signature of superabundance: on average, every additional person contributes more than they consume. Even though there are 22 million more of us, we’ll actually spend 7.5 percent less time working as a country to pay for our celebration compared with 2016.

Americans may spend more dollars, but they spend less of their lives earning this year’s Independence Day feast.

Government money printing during the COVID-19 pandemic did cause a temporary spike, but we have returned to the long-term trend of decreasing time prices and increasing abundance.

This year saw a slight reversal. Compared with the record-low time price in 2025, food prices increased 4.1 percent while blue-collar hourly earnings rose 3.5 percent. As a result, the time price of the cookout edged up by just 0.5 percent—less than one minute of additional work. Even after that small increase, the Independence Day cookout remains substantially more affordable in time than it was a decade ago.

Soil Bacteria Could Save Crops from a Growing Salt Crisis

“Salt is quietly destroying farmland. It builds up through irrigation, creeps in from rising seas, and accumulates faster as the climate warms. 

Hundreds of millions of hectares are already affected worldwide, and the problem is getting worse. Plants, generally speaking, don’t handle salt well. 

But a new study has found that certain soil bacteria do something unexpected when salt stress hits: they show up at plant roots, trigger a chain of biological changes, and make crops significantly more resilient…

What the team found, across multiple crops and multiple soil types, was a consistent pattern. A group of bacteria called pseudomonads kept appearing at plant roots specifically under salt stress…

To test whether the bacteria actually helped, the researchers introduced pseudomonad strains into soybean plants and watched what happened. 

The bacteria colonized the roots. The plants, in both greenhouse conditions and real field trials, grew better – stronger roots, better development, higher yields – than untreated plants in the same salty soil.

The assumption in the field for decades was that plants manage salt stress primarily by controlling sodium, keeping harmful ions out of sensitive tissues and maintaining the chemical balance needed for normal function…

What the bacteria were actually triggering was the production of lignin. If you’ve ever wondered what makes wood hard, lignin is the answer – it’s the structural polymer that reinforces plant cell walls and gives them rigidity and toughness. 

In bacteria-treated plants under salt stress, lignin content in the roots increased significantly, in some cases by more than 30 percent.”

Solar Cold Storage Helps African Farmers Reach Global Markets

“Kenyan farmer Yvonne Anyonyi Mumiah walks in the early morning between rows of rosemary, basil and other crops destined for European supermarkets. She once worried that transport delays or extreme heat could spoil much of her harvest, but now relies on a solar-powered cool storage service to keep her produce fresh.

The pay-per-use model offered by cold-chain company SoKo Fresh charges farmers based on kilograms (pounds) stored, part of a trend in Africa toward using solar-powered cold storage to help prevent one of agriculture’s most persistent problems: food spoilage.”
