The Western World’s First Grid-Scale Small Modular Reactor

“The small modular reactor has been the nuclear industry’s favorite slide for about a decade. Utilities pitch it, governments model it, conference panels argue about it, and for years that was as far as it got in the Western world: a promising design nobody had actually built at the scale of a power grid. Then this spring, a crane in Ontario lowered a 953-tonne slab of steel and concrete into a shaft 35 meters deep and quietly ended the talking phase…

The press releases lean hard on the word ‘first,’ so it helps to pin down which kind of first you are looking at. Both OPG and GE Vernova are careful to say Western world’s first, or G7’s first, grid-scale SMR, and that scoping matters. Russia and China already operate small modular reactors, and Argentina has a pilot under construction, so this is not the first SMR on Earth. It is the first one a G7 country has built and wired to a major grid.

It is also a different machine from the other advanced-reactor projects breaking ground right now. Bill Gates’ TerraPower just started building a sodium-cooled reactor in Wyoming, and a company in Italy is testing a full-scale lead-cooled rig with electric heaters standing in for the fuel. Those are fast reactors chasing exotic coolants. The BWRX-300 is the opposite bet: a deliberately conventional, water-cooled reactor scaled down and built in a factory-style sequence, designed to be boring and repeatable rather than novel. And none of this is making electricity yet. OPG is targeting the end of 2030 for grid connection, with construction itself wrapping up around 2029.”

The World Adds a Third Terawatt of Solar Power

“In March, the world passed a major energy milestone, adding its third terawatt of solar power. Increasingly, poorer countries are leading the shift to solar, analysts say.

It took nearly seven decades, after the invention of the silicon solar cell in 1954, for the world to install 1 terawatt of solar capacity, conceivably enough to power the entire United States. After passing that milestone in 2022, the world added its second terawatt in 2024 and its third in 2026, Bloomberg reports.

BloombergNEF expects installations will continue apace, with the world hitting 9 terawatts of solar power by 2036. Analysts project that, by that date, poor countries will have installed more solar power than rich countries, China notwithstanding.”

China Now Generates Less than Half of Its Electricity from Coal

“China, the world's largest coal consumer, generated less than 50% of its ​electricity from the fossil fuel in the six months to June, marking a first ‌for the country, which has been promoting the use of renewable energy, officials said.

Coal's share of the power mix was 49.7%, Xing Yiteng, deputy director general of the energy administration's development and planning office, told a press conference on Thursday.”

New LNG Terminal Expands North American Export Capacity

“Energia Costa Azul, the second liquefied natural gas (LNG) export facility in Mexico, shipped its initial cargo from Phase 1 of the terminal on July 8, according to the project developer. The completion of the project adds 0.4 billion cubic feet per day (Bcf/d) of nominal export capacity from a single train, tripling Mexico’s LNG export capacity. The facility is the first terminal in Mexico and the second in North America, following LNG Canada, to be located on the Pacific Coast, boosting North American export capacity there to 2.2 Bcf/d. The Pacific Coast location allows for shorter shipping routes to importers in Asia.”

After Decades of Drought, Water Is Rising in the African Sahel

“Near-extinct oryx are returning. Farms are prospering as irrigation water reaches fields for the first time in decades. Farmers are even nurturing new trees on their land. Once a byword for drought and famine, the African Sahel region on the southern flank of the Sahara Desert now has more water than it has for decades. Wells are filling as water tables have risen by 13 feet or more in places. Lake Chad, which was one of Africa’s largest expanses of water before shriveling during the droughts, is recovering.

Over years of drought in the late 20th century, the sun hard baked the soils of the Sahel. Now, erratic but extreme rains are returning to this semi-arid region, causing lethal floods but also replenishing rivers, filling desert depressions, restoring water to dried riverbeds known as wadis, and sluicing rainwater off impermeable soils directly into aquifers. The process began in the 1990s but has accelerated in the past five years…

But increased rainfall since the drought years of the 1970s and 1980s explains only some of the rewetting of the Sahel. It cannot fully account for the transformation, say researchers. Also driving the rewetting, they posit, are changes to the land surface, ranging from the internationally funded Great Green Wall project to the revival of traditional water harvesting methods and the chaos caused by jihadist militants, which has led to the abandonment of irrigation projects that once emptied rivers of their flows.

Much remains unclear in these remote lands on the edge of the Sahara Desert, but the trend seems set to be long-term, with climate scientists saying more — and more extreme — rainfall is on the way in the 21st century. As underground water reserves revive, some are forecasting an agricultural renaissance.”
