The Saddest Thing About China’s One-Child Policy

By Chelsea German
The recent abandonment of China’s one-child policy deserves celebration. The policy was responsible for much suffering, including infanticide, abortions and sterilizations. It also skewed the gender ratio to 117 boys per 100 girls, which will leave many Chinese men who want to marry unable to do so. Perhaps the saddest part of the entire policy is an aspect that many have overlooked: fertility would have fallen even without draconian measures undertaken by the Chinese government. Human Progress Editor Marian Tupy breaks it down in his article yesterday in Reason.
